What to watch for
- Carrageenan Moderate risk
A seaweed-based thickener in many wet foods. EFSA kept it allowed but flagged data gaps, and animal studies have linked degraded carrageenan to gut inflammation. - BHT Moderate risk
A synthetic preservative related to BHA. Regulators allow it at low levels, but evidence on long-term effects is mixed and natural alternatives exist. - Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients. - Calcium propionate Low risk
A mould inhibitor used in baked treats. Regulators consider it safe at normal levels. - Potassium sorbate Low risk
A mould inhibitor used in soft and semi-moist foods and treats. Regulators consider it safe at normal levels. - Low protein 24.4%
Below 30% on a dry-matter basis (cat).
What it does well
