What to watch for
- BHA High risk
A synthetic preservative that keeps fats from going rancid. The U.S. National Toxicology Program lists BHA as 'reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen' based on animal studies. Natural alternatives (mixed tocopherols) exist. - Corn syrup Moderate risk
A sugar syrup made from corn starch, used in semi-moist foods and treats. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing. - Propylene glycol Moderate risk
A moisture-keeping additive used in soft and semi-moist foods and treats. The FDA permits it in dog food, but it has no nutritional value, and it is prohibited in cat food because it damages cats' red blood cells. - Titanium dioxide Moderate risk
A white pigment. In 2021 EFSA concluded it could no longer be considered safe as a human food additive because DNA damage could not be ruled out. It adds nothing for dogs. - Red 40 Moderate risk
An artificial color added to make food look appealing to people; dogs do not care what color their food is. It was one of the dyes in a well-known UK study linking color mixes to hyperactivity in some children. - Garlic Moderate risk
Garlic belongs to the onion family, which can damage dogs' red blood cells. Whether the small amounts used as flavoring matter is debated, but vets advise caution. - Soy flour Low risk
Ground soybeans used as a protein and binder. Soy is a recognised allergen for some dogs. - Wheat flour Low risk
Ground wheat, common in treats and biscuits as a binder. Wheat is a known allergen for some dogs.
