What to watch for
- BHA High risk
A synthetic preservative that keeps fats from going rancid. The U.S. National Toxicology Program lists BHA as 'reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen' based on animal studies. Natural alternatives (mixed tocopherols) exist. - Sugar Moderate risk
Table sugar. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing. - Red 40 Moderate risk
An artificial color added to make food look appealing to people; dogs do not care what color their food is. It was one of the dyes in a well-known UK study linking color mixes to hyperactivity in some children. - Wheat flour Low risk
Ground wheat, common in treats and biscuits as a binder. Wheat is a known allergen for some dogs. - Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients. - Animal fat Low risk
Fat rendered from unnamed animals. A fine energy source, but the species is not disclosed and it is often preserved with BHA; check what follows it in brackets. - Natural flavor Low risk
Flavoring from natural sources. Normally safe, but the term can hide which animal or plant it came from, which matters for allergies. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease.
