What to watch for
- Pea flour Moderate risk
Ground peas. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list. - Sugar Moderate risk
Table sugar. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing. - Potato starch Low risk
Starch from potatoes used as a binder. Adds calories but little nutrition. - Sorbitol Low risk
A sugar alcohol used to keep soft treats moist. Unlike xylitol it is not known to be toxic to dogs, but large amounts can cause loose stools. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Caramel colour Low risk
A brown color made by heating sugars, used to make food look 'meaty'. EFSA judged it acceptable at normal intakes, but it does nothing for your dog. - Smoke flavor Low risk
A smoky taste for treats, used in small amounts. - Potassium sorbate Low risk
A mould inhibitor used in soft and semi-moist foods and treats. Regulators consider it safe at normal levels.
