What to watch for

• Pea flour Moderate risk
  Ground peas. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list.

  An artificial color added to make food look appealing to people; dogs do not care what color their food is. It was part of the UK hyperactivity study in children.
• Wheat flour Low risk
  Ground wheat, common in treats and biscuits as a binder. Wheat is a known allergen for some dogs.
• Glycerin Low risk
  A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients.
• Sorbitol Low risk
  A sugar alcohol used to keep soft treats moist. Unlike xylitol it is not known to be toxic to dogs, but large amounts can cause loose stools.
