What to watch for
- Pea starch Low risk
Starch from peas, used as a binder in grain-free kibble. Part of the legume load the FDA DCM investigation looked at. - Natural flavor Low risk
Flavoring from natural sources. Normally safe, but the term can hide which animal or plant it came from, which matters for allergies. - Sodium tripolyphosphate Low risk
A phosphate used for texture and, in dental chews, to reduce tartar. It adds phosphorus, which matters for dogs with kidney disease. - Potassium sorbate Low risk
A mould inhibitor used in soft and semi-moist foods and treats. Regulators consider it safe at normal levels. - Caramel colour Low risk
A brown color made by heating sugars, used to make food look 'meaty'. EFSA judged it acceptable at normal intakes, but it does nothing for your dog. - Low protein 13.6%
Below 30% on a dry-matter basis (cat).
What it does well
- Named meat first
First ingredient is salmon.
