What to watch for
- Dextrose Moderate risk
A simple sugar. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing. - Peas Moderate risk
Peas add plant protein, starch and fiber. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list. - Wheat flour Low risk
Ground wheat, common in treats and biscuits as a binder. Wheat is a known allergen for some dogs. - Potato starch Low risk
Starch from potatoes used as a binder. Adds calories but little nutrition. - Potatoes Low risk
Cooked potato is a digestible starch used in many grain-free kibbles. Potatoes were common in diets reported in the FDA DCM investigation. - Copper sulfate Low risk
A source of copper, an essential trace mineral. Some breeds accumulate copper in the liver, and vets have raised concern that some dog foods supply more than dogs need. - Sodium tripolyphosphate Low risk
A phosphate used for texture and, in dental chews, to reduce tartar. It adds phosphorus, which matters for dogs with kidney disease. - Caramel colour Low risk
A brown color made by heating sugars, used to make food look 'meaty'. EFSA judged it acceptable at normal intakes, but it does nothing for your dog.
