What to watch for
- Cane molasses Moderate risk
A sugary syrup from sugar refining. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing. - Peas Moderate risk
Peas add plant protein, starch and fiber. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list. - Potatoes Low risk
Cooked potato is a digestible starch used in many grain-free kibbles. Potatoes were common in diets reported in the FDA DCM investigation. - Wheat flour Low risk
Ground wheat, common in treats and biscuits as a binder. Wheat is a known allergen for some dogs. - Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients. - Natural flavor Low risk
Flavoring from natural sources. Normally safe, but the term can hide which animal or plant it came from, which matters for allergies. - Low protein 10.2%
Below 22% on a dry-matter basis.
