What to watch for
- Artificial colors Moderate risk
Unspecified synthetic dyes. They are there for the owner's eye, not the dog's nutrition. - Carrageenan Moderate risk
A seaweed-based thickener in many wet foods. EFSA kept it allowed but flagged data gaps, and animal studies have linked degraded carrageenan to gut inflammation. - Sodium nitrite Moderate risk
A curing salt that keeps color and stops bacteria in some wet foods and jerky. Nitrites can form nitrosamines, which are a cancer concern at higher exposures. - Meat by-products Low risk
Clean parts of slaughtered mammals other than muscle meat, such as organs. AAFCO says by-products can be nutritious, but the label does not say which animal they came from, so you cannot steer around an allergy. - Copper sulfate Low risk
A source of copper, an essential trace mineral. Some breeds accumulate copper in the liver, and vets have raised concern that some dog foods supply more than dogs need. - Sodium tripolyphosphate Low risk
A phosphate used for texture and, in dental chews, to reduce tartar. It adds phosphorus, which matters for dogs with kidney disease. - Smoke flavor Low risk
A smoky taste for treats, used in small amounts.
What it does well
- High protein 36.4%
30% or more on a dry-matter basis. - Named meat first
