What to watch for
- Pea flour Moderate risk
Ground peas. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list. - Sugar Moderate risk
Table sugar. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing. - Pea starch Low risk
Starch from peas, used as a binder in grain-free kibble. Part of the legume load the FDA DCM investigation looked at. - Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients. - Powdered cellulose Low risk
Purified plant fiber used to add bulk, often in weight-control foods. Safe, but provides no nutrients. - Potassium sorbate Low risk
A mould inhibitor used in soft and semi-moist foods and treats. Regulators consider it safe at normal levels. - Caramel colour Low risk
A brown color made by heating sugars, used to make food look 'meaty'. EFSA judged it acceptable at normal intakes, but it does nothing for your dog. - Low protein 10.3%
Below 22% on a dry-matter basis.
