What to watch for
- BHA High risk
A synthetic preservative that keeps fats from going rancid. The U.S. National Toxicology Program lists BHA as 'reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen' based on animal studies. Natural alternatives (mixed tocopherols) exist. - Ethoxyquin High risk
A synthetic antioxidant used mostly to stabilise fish meal and fats. EFSA could not confirm its safety and the EU suspended it as a feed additive; the U.S. still allows it up to 150 ppm. - Pea protein Moderate risk
Protein extracted from peas, used to raise the protein number without more meat. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list. - Titanium dioxide Moderate risk
A white pigment. In 2021 EFSA concluded it could no longer be considered safe as a human food additive because DNA damage could not be ruled out. It adds nothing for dogs. - Yellow 6 Moderate risk
An artificial color added to make food look appealing to people; dogs do not care what color their food is. It was part of the UK hyperactivity study in children. - Yellow 5 Moderate risk
An artificial color added to make food look appealing to people; dogs do not care what color their food is. It can cause sensitivity reactions in some people and was part of the UK hyperactivity study. - Wheat flour Low risk
Ground wheat, common in treats and biscuits as a binder. Wheat is a known allergen for some dogs. - Animal digest Low risk
A flavor coating made by breaking down animal tissue, sprayed on kibble to make it tasty. When the species isn't named you can't tell what animal it came from.
