What to watch for

• Titanium dioxide Moderate risk
  A white pigment. In 2021 EFSA concluded it could no longer be considered safe as a human food additive because DNA damage could not be ruled out. It adds nothing for dogs.
• Carrageenan Moderate risk
  A seaweed-based thickener in many wet foods. EFSA kept it allowed but flagged data gaps, and animal studies have linked degraded carrageenan to gut inflammation.
• Menadione sodium bisulfite complex Moderate risk
  A synthetic form of vitamin K (K3). EFSA concluded it is safe for dogs at the levels used in feed, but it is flagged as a precaution: it is a synthetic form not used in human supplements, and natural vitamin K1 is an alternative.
• Red 3 Moderate risk
  An artificial color added to make food look appealing to people; dogs do not care what color their food is. In January 2025 the FDA revoked authorization for FD&C Red No. 3 in human food and ingested drugs because it caused cancer in male rats at high doses; EFSA also set a low acceptable intake.
• Sodium nitrite Moderate risk
  A curing salt that keeps color and stops bacteria in some wet foods and jerky. Nitrites can form nitrosamines, which are a cancer concern at higher exposures.
• Tuna Low risk
  Named fish protein. Large predatory fish such as tuna carry more mercury than small fish, so it is better as an occasional ingredient than a daily staple.
• Caramel colour Low risk
  A brown color made by heating sugars, used to make food look 'meaty'. EFSA judged it acceptable at normal intakes, but it does nothing for your dog.
• Salt Low risk
  Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease.
