What to watch for
- Ethoxyquin High risk
A synthetic antioxidant used mostly to stabilise fish meal and fats. EFSA could not confirm its safety and the EU suspended it as a feed additive; the U.S. still allows it up to 150 ppm. - Carrageenan Moderate risk
A seaweed-based thickener in many wet foods. EFSA kept it allowed but flagged data gaps, and animal studies have linked degraded carrageenan to gut inflammation. - Menadione sodium bisulfite complex Moderate risk
A synthetic form of vitamin K (K3). EFSA concluded it is safe for dogs at the levels used in feed, but it is flagged as a precaution: it is a synthetic form not used in human supplements, and natural vitamin K1 is an alternative. - Sodium nitrite Moderate risk
A curing salt that keeps color and stops bacteria in some wet foods and jerky. Nitrites can form nitrosamines, which are a cancer concern at higher exposures. - Tuna Low risk
Named fish protein. Large predatory fish such as tuna carry more mercury than small fish, so it is better as an occasional ingredient than a daily staple. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Copper sulfate Low risk
A source of copper, an essential trace mineral. Some breeds accumulate copper in the liver, and vets have raised concern that some dog foods supply more than dogs need.
What it does well
- High protein 66.7%
40% or more on a dry-matter basis (cat). - Named meat first
First ingredient is tuna.
