What to watch for

• Meat and bone meal Moderate risk
Rendered mammal tissue including bone, from unnamed species. High in minerals (ash) and usually less digestible than a named meat meal.
• Peas Moderate risk
Peas add plant protein, starch and fiber. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list.
• Corn Low risk
Cooked corn is a digestible source of energy and some protein. It is often criticised but is not a common allergen; its main risk is mould toxins (aflatoxin) when quality control is poor.
• Pea starch Low risk
Starch from peas, used as a binder in grain-free kibble. Part of the legume load the FDA DCM investigation looked at.
• Natural flavor Low risk
Flavoring from natural sources. Normally safe, but the term can hide which animal or plant it came from, which matters for allergies.
• Poultry meal Low risk
Rendered poultry from an unnamed bird species. A concentrated protein, but less specific than 'chicken meal'.
• Copper sulfate Low risk
A source of copper, an essential trace mineral. Some breeds accumulate copper in the liver, and vets have raised concern that some dog foods supply more than dogs need.
• Sweet potato Low risk
A starchy root vegetable that supplies carbohydrate, fiber and beta-carotene. Potatoes and sweet potatoes were common in the grain-free diets reported in the FDA DCM investigation.

What it does well
