What to watch for

• Pea protein Moderate risk
  Protein extracted from peas, used to raise the protein number without more meat. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list.
• Potato starch Low risk
  Starch from potatoes used as a binder. Adds calories but little nutrition.
• Glycerin Low risk
  A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients.
• Honey Low risk
  A natural sugar, fine in small treat amounts. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing.
• Powdered cellulose Low risk
  Purified plant fiber used to add bulk, often in weight-control foods. Safe, but provides no nutrients.
