What to watch for
- Peas Moderate risk
Peas add plant protein, starch and fiber. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list. - Artificial colors Moderate risk
Unspecified synthetic dyes. They are there for the owner's eye, not the dog's nutrition. - Carrageenan Moderate risk
A seaweed-based thickener in many wet foods. EFSA kept it allowed but flagged data gaps, and animal studies have linked degraded carrageenan to gut inflammation. - Garlic Moderate risk
Garlic belongs to the onion family, which can damage dogs' red blood cells. Whether the small amounts used as flavoring matter is debated, but vets advise caution. - Potato starch Low risk
Starch from potatoes used as a binder. Adds calories but little nutrition. - Sweet potato Low risk
A starchy root vegetable that supplies carbohydrate, fiber and beta-carotene. Potatoes and sweet potatoes were common in the grain-free diets reported in the FDA DCM investigation. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Corn Low risk
Cooked corn is a digestible source of energy and some protein. It is often criticised but is not a common allergen; its main risk is mould toxins (aflatoxin) when quality control is poor.
What it does well
