What to watch for

• BHA High risk
A synthetic preservative that keeps fats from going rancid. The U.S. National Toxicology Program lists BHA as 'reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen' based on animal studies. Natural alternatives (mixed tocopherols) exist.
• Sugar Moderate risk
Table sugar. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing.
• Artificial colors Moderate risk
Unspecified synthetic dyes. They are there for the owner's eye, not the dog's nutrition.
• Wheat Low risk
A cooked cereal grain that supplies energy. Wheat is one of the more commonly reported food allergens in dogs, though grain allergies overall are uncommon.
• Soybean meal Low risk
Ground soybeans after oil extraction, a cheap plant protein. Soy is a recognised food allergen in some dogs and can cause gas.
• Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients.
• Corn gluten meal Low risk
The protein left after starch is removed from corn. It raises the protein number on the label cheaply, but plant protein is less complete than meat protein.
• Corn Low risk
Cooked corn is a digestible source of energy and some protein. It is often criticised but is not a common allergen; its main risk is mould toxins (aflatoxin) when quality control is poor.

What it does well

• Named meat first
  First ingredient is pork.
