What to watch for
- Menadione sodium bisulfite complex Moderate risk
A synthetic form of vitamin K (K3). EFSA concluded it is safe for dogs at the levels used in feed, but it is flagged as a precaution: it is a synthetic form not used in human supplements, and natural vitamin K1 is an alternative. - Corn Low risk
Cooked corn is a digestible source of energy and some protein. It is often criticised but is not a common allergen; its main risk is mould toxins (aflatoxin) when quality control is poor. - Brewers rice Low risk
Small broken pieces of rice left over from milling. Digestible energy but fewer nutrients than whole rice. - Wheat flour Low risk
Ground wheat, common in treats and biscuits as a binder. Wheat is a known allergen for some dogs. - Sodium tripolyphosphate Low risk
A phosphate used for texture and, in dental chews, to reduce tartar. It adds phosphorus, which matters for dogs with kidney disease. - Animal digest Low risk
A flavor coating made by breaking down animal tissue, sprayed on kibble to make it tasty. When the species isn't named you can't tell what animal it came from. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Copper sulfate Low risk
A source of copper, an essential trace mineral. Some breeds accumulate copper in the liver, and vets have raised concern that some dog foods supply more than dogs need.
What it does well
- Taurine added
Cats need taurine in their diet; this label lists it.
