What to watch for
- Menadione sodium bisulfite complex Moderate risk
A synthetic form of vitamin K (K3). EFSA concluded it is safe for dogs at the levels used in feed, but it is flagged as a precaution: it is a synthetic form not used in human supplements, and natural vitamin K1 is an alternative. - Carrageenan Moderate risk
A seaweed-based thickener in many wet foods. EFSA kept it allowed but flagged data gaps, and animal studies have linked degraded carrageenan to gut inflammation. - Wheat gluten Low risk
Wheat protein used to bind wet foods and raise the protein number. Less complete than animal protein. - Meat by-products Low risk
Clean parts of slaughtered mammals other than muscle meat, such as organs. AAFCO says by-products can be nutritious, but the label does not say which animal they came from, so you cannot steer around an allergy. - Tuna Low risk
Named fish protein. Large predatory fish such as tuna carry more mercury than small fish, so it is better as an occasional ingredient than a daily staple. - Soy flour Low risk
Ground soybeans used as a protein and binder. Soy is a recognised allergen for some dogs. - Soy protein isolate Low risk
Concentrated soy protein used to raise the protein number. Soy is a recognised allergen for some dogs. - Natural flavor Low risk
Flavoring from natural sources. Normally safe, but the term can hide which animal or plant it came from, which matters for allergies.
What it does well
- High protein 55.3%
40% or more on a dry-matter basis (cat). - Taurine added
Cats need taurine in their diet; this label lists it.
