What to watch for
- Menadione sodium bisulfite complex Moderate risk
A synthetic form of vitamin K (K3). EFSA concluded it is safe for dogs at the levels used in feed, but it is flagged as a precaution: it is a synthetic form not used in human supplements, and natural vitamin K1 is an alternative. - Corn gluten meal Low risk
The protein left after starch is removed from corn. It raises the protein number on the label cheaply, but plant protein is less complete than meat protein. - Poultry by-product meal Low risk
Rendered poultry parts such as necks, feet and organs (not feathers). Often a decent protein, but 'poultry' can mean chicken, turkey or duck and quality varies batch to batch. - Brewers rice Low risk
Small broken pieces of rice left over from milling. Digestible energy but fewer nutrients than whole rice. - Wheat gluten Low risk
Wheat protein used to bind wet foods and raise the protein number. Less complete than animal protein. - Corn Low risk
Cooked corn is a digestible source of energy and some protein. It is often criticised but is not a common allergen; its main risk is mould toxins (aflatoxin) when quality control is poor. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Sodium tripolyphosphate Low risk
A phosphate used for texture and, in dental chews, to reduce tartar. It adds phosphorus, which matters for dogs with kidney disease.
What it does well
- High protein 45.5%
40% or more on a dry-matter basis (cat). - Taurine added
Cats need taurine in their diet; this label lists it.
