What to watch for
- Menadione sodium bisulfite complex Moderate risk
A synthetic form of vitamin K (K3). EFSA concluded it is safe for dogs at the levels used in feed, but it is flagged as a precaution: it is a synthetic form not used in human supplements, and natural vitamin K1 is an alternative. - Brewers rice Low risk
Small broken pieces of rice left over from milling. Digestible energy but fewer nutrients than whole rice. - Poultry by-product meal Low risk
Rendered poultry parts such as necks, feet and organs (not feathers). Often a decent protein, but 'poultry' can mean chicken, turkey or duck and quality varies batch to batch. - Animal digest Low risk
A flavor coating made by breaking down animal tissue, sprayed on kibble to make it tasty. When the species isn't named you can't tell what animal it came from. - Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Copper sulfate Low risk
A source of copper, an essential trace mineral. Some breeds accumulate copper in the liver, and vets have raised concern that some dog foods supply more than dogs need.
