What to watch for
- Menadione sodium bisulfite complex Moderate risk
A synthetic form of vitamin K (K3). EFSA concluded it is safe for dogs at the levels used in feed, but it is flagged as a precaution: it is a synthetic form not used in human supplements, and natural vitamin K1 is an alternative. - Corn Low risk
Cooked corn is a digestible source of energy and some protein. It is often criticised but is not a common allergen; its main risk is mould toxins (aflatoxin) when quality control is poor. - Poultry by-product meal Low risk
Rendered poultry parts such as necks, feet and organs (not feathers). Often a decent protein, but 'poultry' can mean chicken, turkey or duck and quality varies batch to batch. - Powdered cellulose Low risk
Purified plant fiber used to add bulk, often in weight-control foods. Safe, but provides no nutrients. - Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients. - Natural flavor Low risk
Flavoring from natural sources. Normally safe, but the term can hide which animal or plant it came from, which matters for allergies. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Sodium tripolyphosphate Low risk
A phosphate used for texture and, in dental chews, to reduce tartar. It adds phosphorus, which matters for dogs with kidney disease.
