What to watch for
- Corn Low risk
Cooked corn is a digestible source of energy and some protein. It is often criticised but is not a common allergen; its main risk is mould toxins (aflatoxin) when quality control is poor. - Wheat Low risk
A cooked cereal grain that supplies energy. Wheat is one of the more commonly reported food allergens in dogs, though grain allergies overall are uncommon. - Corn gluten meal Low risk
The protein left after starch is removed from corn. It raises the protein number on the label cheaply, but plant protein is less complete than meat protein. - Powdered cellulose Low risk
Purified plant fiber used to add bulk, often in weight-control foods. Safe, but provides no nutrients. - Pea fiber Low risk
Fiber from pea hulls. A legume ingredient, so it counts toward the legume load in grain-free foods. - Natural flavor Low risk
Flavoring from natural sources. Normally safe, but the term can hide which animal or plant it came from, which matters for allergies. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Sodium tripolyphosphate Low risk
A phosphate used for texture and, in dental chews, to reduce tartar. It adds phosphorus, which matters for dogs with kidney disease.
What it does well
- Taurine added
Cats need taurine in their diet; this label lists it.
