What to watch for
- Brewers rice Low risk
Small broken pieces of rice left over from milling. Digestible energy but fewer nutrients than whole rice. - Corn gluten meal Low risk
The protein left after starch is removed from corn. It raises the protein number on the label cheaply, but plant protein is less complete than meat protein. - Natural flavor Low risk
Flavoring from natural sources. Normally safe, but the term can hide which animal or plant it came from, which matters for allergies. - Powdered cellulose Low risk
Purified plant fiber used to add bulk, often in weight-control foods. Safe, but provides no nutrients. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Vegetable oil Low risk
An unnamed plant oil. Fine as energy, but the label does not say which plant it came from. - Potassium sorbate Low risk
A mould inhibitor used in soft and semi-moist foods and treats. Regulators consider it safe at normal levels. - Copper sulfate Low risk
A source of copper, an essential trace mineral. Some breeds accumulate copper in the liver, and vets have raised concern that some dog foods supply more than dogs need.
