What to watch for
- Peas Moderate risk
Peas add plant protein, starch and fiber. The FDA has been investigating reports of heart disease (DCM) in dogs eating diets high in peas, lentils and other legumes, often grain-free. No cause has been proven, but it is worth knowing when legumes sit near the top of the list. - Titanium dioxide Moderate risk
A white pigment. In 2021 EFSA concluded it could no longer be considered safe as a human food additive because DNA damage could not be ruled out. It adds nothing for dogs. - Artificial flavors Moderate risk
Synthetic flavoring added to make food more appealing. The label does not have to say what it is. - Red 40 Moderate risk
An artificial color added to make food look appealing to people; dogs do not care what color their food is. It was one of the dyes in a well-known UK study linking color mixes to hyperactivity in some children. - Corn Low risk
Cooked corn is a digestible source of energy and some protein. It is often criticised but is not a common allergen; its main risk is mould toxins (aflatoxin) when quality control is poor. - Sorbitol Low risk
A sugar alcohol used to keep soft treats moist. Unlike xylitol it is not known to be toxic to dogs, but large amounts can cause loose stools. - Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients. - Sweet potato Low risk
A starchy root vegetable that supplies carbohydrate, fiber and beta-carotene. Potatoes and sweet potatoes were common in the grain-free diets reported in the FDA DCM investigation.
