What to watch for
- Sugar Moderate risk
Table sugar. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing. - Cane molasses Moderate risk
A sugary syrup from sugar refining. Dogs have no dietary need for added sugar; it adds calories and is mainly there to make food more appealing. - Garlic Moderate risk
Garlic belongs to the onion family, which can damage dogs' red blood cells. Whether the small amounts used as flavoring matter is debated, but vets advise caution. - Glycerin Low risk
A sweet-tasting liquid that keeps soft treats moist. EFSA considers it of low safety concern; it adds calories without nutrients. - Salt Low risk
Salt supplies sodium and chloride, which dogs need. Pet foods use small amounts; high salt is mainly a concern for dogs with heart or kidney disease. - Smoke flavor Low risk
A smoky taste for treats, used in small amounts. - Sodium tripolyphosphate Low risk
A phosphate used for texture and, in dental chews, to reduce tartar. It adds phosphorus, which matters for dogs with kidney disease. - Potassium sorbate Low risk
A mould inhibitor used in soft and semi-moist foods and treats. Regulators consider it safe at normal levels.
