What to watch for
- BHA High risk
A synthetic preservative that keeps fats from going rancid. The U.S. National Toxicology Program lists BHA as 'reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen' based on animal studies. Natural alternatives (mixed tocopherols) exist. - BHT Moderate risk
A synthetic preservative related to BHA. Regulators allow it at low levels, but evidence on long-term effects is mixed and natural alternatives exist. - Titanium dioxide Moderate risk
A white pigment. In 2021 EFSA concluded it could no longer be considered safe as a human food additive because DNA damage could not be ruled out. It adds nothing for dogs. - Menadione sodium bisulfite complex Moderate risk
A synthetic form of vitamin K (K3). EFSA concluded it is safe for dogs at the levels used in feed, but it is flagged as a precaution: it is a synthetic form not used in human supplements, and natural vitamin K1 is an alternative. - Sodium nitrite Moderate risk
A curing salt that keeps color and stops bacteria in some wet foods and jerky. Nitrites can form nitrosamines, which are a cancer concern at higher exposures. - Wheat gluten Low risk
Wheat protein used to bind wet foods and raise the protein number. Less complete than animal protein. - Meat by-products Low risk
Clean parts of slaughtered mammals other than muscle meat, such as organs. AAFCO says by-products can be nutritious, but the label does not say which animal they came from, so you cannot steer around an allergy. - Soy flour Low risk
Ground soybeans used as a protein and binder. Soy is a recognised allergen for some dogs.
What it does well
- Taurine added
Cats need taurine in their diet; this label lists it.
